What Blue Island's garbage pickup will take

Before you pay anyone to haul something away, it is worth knowing what Blue Island's regular garbage service will take. Here is what we could confirm from official sources: the city's own site or its hauler's page for Blue Island, linked under each rule.

Who collects the garbage

Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS), the City's exclusive residential garbage and recycling provider under a contract that began July 1, 2017 (a newer City flyer refers to a renewal contract with LRS). One 95-gallon trash cart collected weekly and one 95-gallon recycling cart every other week.

Furniture and bulk items

Two bulk items a week go out with regular trash under the City's renewal contract with LRS, 50 pounds or less each. More than two items that fit in a two-yard dumpster are picked up by appointment through Public Works (708-597-8604). Bigger loads are the property owner's job; LRS can make special arrangements at 844-633-3577, and charges may apply.

Yard waste

Per the City's LRS flyer, yard waste runs from April to December 15 each year. Use paper or Kraft bags or personal cans of 35 gallons or less, each up to 50 pounds; no plastic bags. Branches and twigs go in twined bundles no longer than 4 feet and no more than 18 inches across. (The City's Yard Waste web page still says April 1 through November 30.)

Exact wording: “Yard waste collection begins April and ends December 15th of each year. ... Residents must use either paper/Kraft bags or personal cans (35 gallons or less). Each option will be limited to 50 lbs. NO Plastic Bags! - NO EXCEPTIONS. ... Bundles of branches and twigs will be accepted but must be in twined bundles that are no longer than 4 feet in length and 18 inches in diameter.”

Paint, chemicals and other hazardous waste

LRS does not take household hazardous waste (lead-based paint, paint thinner, mineral spirits, gasoline, oil and other automotive liquids, propane tanks), and the flyer names no drop-off site. Empty or dried-up oil-based paint cans may go out with regular trash. The flyer asks residents to find other outlets for lithium batteries.
